How NOT to Get Overwhelmed on Job Boards
How NOT to Get Overwhelmed on Job Boards I think everyone can agree there is something overwhelming about using job board sites to search for a new job. You go on the site, scroll for what seems like an eternity and find maybe 3 positions that seem both appealing and suited for your experience level. Go on three days later, and your recommended new jobs list suddenly consists of 139 new jobs. What?? Between feeling like you are going to miss something, feeling like your eyes are glazing over, and feeling like there is no better option to look, job boards can be total stressors! Letâs break down some of the best search sites, their most useful tools, and some general advice for navigating a job search. Most Popular Job Board Sites: Indeed Indeed advertises itself as the number one job search site, and for all intensive purposes, it is one of the most user friendly sites out there. With a comprehensive listing and a memory for your previous searches, Indeed allows users to quickly find jobs in their area, with additional search features such as job type, salary requirements and more. Despite these great features, Indeed can be overwhelming to users due to the sheer volume of results. Indeed has featured tools to make your search more manageable. If using Indeed, sign up for customized email updates. This useful tool will send a daily email with 30 jobs matching your search. This will help you to feel in control by making the search feel more manageable and cutting out the time wasted scrolling through unwanted positions. Indeed also offers a Google tool bar, making it easier to search for positions, from any site. This will keep you more motivated and attentive to the job search. It will also let you search when insp iration strikes! The third feature tool from Indeed may be the coolest. Indeed offers a tool called Path, which helps you see how others have attained your dream job, or conversely, to see where your job can take you. .@indeed is the worlds largest job board, have you taken advantage of it yet? https://t.co/7KODHjfcxG pic.twitter.com/IG1k2Wlrjx SocialTalent (@SocialTalent) November 17, 2015 Monster Monster prompts users to submit their resumes, and then uses those to find matching careers. Monster works in both ways, allowing candidates and recruiters browsing access to find connections. In addition to searches, Monster offers Community information pages for jobseekers in certain industries. The communities show available positions, industry news and other support services. Share with any grads you know going to their first #job interview soon! https://t.co/9G0uxqxtVa pic.twitter.com/LKGBQpQeGW Monster (@Monster) May 22, 2016 LinkedIn LinkedIn has changed the game for job seekers by putting all resumes and accomplishments in one easy-to-view location. When searching for jobs, donât make the mistake of making your LinkedIn too much about you and job openings. You can fine tune your page forever, but if you are not actively seeking connections on LinkedIn, you are missing a key feature of the tool. Join groups relevant to your industry and passions. This can help you stay up to date on trends, which will be helpful when interviewing and finding your niche. You will also make valuable connections which may be able to propel you into a new position. If you are a college graduate, join your alumni group. LinkedIn will then show you a listing of alumni who are currently working for a certain company. If you are going to apply to those jobs, reach out to those alumni for an information interview. They will not only give you honest insight into the company but also may be able to refer you for your desired position. If you are looking for more ways to make the most of LinkedIn, consider taking this course from Career Enlightenment on 3 Secrets to Finding a Job Using LinkedIn. Simply hired The best tools on Simply Hired are the Company Directory and the Salary Estimator. The Company Director shows a list of the companies currently hiring. Try browsing this before to narrow down or concentrate your search. Once you know who is hiring, go to their company website to learn more about the mission and apply for your desired position. This tool is especially great if you are more interested in rising within a certain company, rather than a specific type of position, for example, if you would rather work for a large corporate real estate company than be a customer service representative anywhere. The Salary Estimator is pretty self- explanatory. It will help show you where you should be and what you should be focusing on if you would like to reach a higher salary in a certain field. #JobSearchTips pic.twitter.com/tEMfiMJIZr Simply Hired (@SimplyHired) May 20, 2016 Zealify Zealify is great search site for those looking to make a big impact in a small company, as they work to get small and medium-sized businesses more online exposure when it comes to recruiting talent. On Zealify, you can browse by company or by role to find the your best match. Zealify prioritizes building these companies with the right candidates and in turn, want people to love their careers. [NEW] @Pulsar_Social are #hiring on Zealify! Find out what its like to work at Pulsar. https://t.co/JKJx6LL5mZ pic.twitter.com/dK2RrKa2VT Zealify (@Zealify) May 20, 2016 Overall Advice Use the best features for each of the above job sites to make the most of your job search. Know your strengths and weaknesses, too. If your problem is staying motivated, having jobs show up in your inbox everyday via Indeed will keep you moving in the right direction. If you are a people person, make sure you are constantly building and working your LinkedIn network or Monsterâs Community pages. Make sure you are going on each companyâs website, rather than running your entire search through one- click application on job board sites. While they do promise to save time on applications, applying for a job without customizing your resume and cover letter for keywords is a waste of time. Use the job boards as a source, but make sure you are taking your time when applying. Dont forget to tailor your resume before applying to each position. Finally, stay organized by knowing the types of jobs you want to apply for, and when you need to follow up on your application. Donât fall into a trap of one-click applications, and then forgetting about following up. Companies will not know you are truly interested if you donât send in a personalized cover letter and then follow up afterwards. Image: Shutterstock

Applying Newtons 3rd Law of Motion to the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Applying Newtons 3rd Law of Motion to the Workplace - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you realize the laws of physics are in force in the workplace? Be aware they may not manifest exactly the same in the workplace as they do in the universe. Let me explain. Newtonâs Third Law of Motion states âfor every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.â In physics this always holds true. Thatâs why itâs called a âlaw in physics. There are mathematical calculations that mathematicians and physicists, etc. can use to show us how. In leading our daily lives this law of the physical universe gives us comfort and certainty as to what type of reaction we can expect from certain actions we take. It allows us to trust our environment. It allows us to trust what we will get in return from our actions in our environment. That trust allows us to move through out our day-to-day lives with confidence in many ways We throw a ball up in the air, we know it will come back down. We sit down into a chair and we know the chair will exert an equal and opposite force allowing us to sit down. We kick a concrete wall only to learn the hard way that the wall will exert an equal force upon our foot in return. In the workplace itâs a little more nebulous. For the workplace you may even argue that Newtonâs Third Law of Motion should be re-stated: For most every action there is an unequal and disproportionate reaction. This comes in many forms, such as: Offering someone âconstructive feedbackâ only to get a very defensive or even angry reaction, or Making an agreement and commitment with someone on specific next steps. Yet, the follow through by the other person is âunequalâ to their commitment, or You leave a voice mail message for someone for which you are still waiting a return phone call (despite a recorded promise to call back âas soon as possible)?â These unequal and disproportionate reactions to our actions in the workplace cause us to lose trust in our work environment. Losing trust in our work environment creates uncertainty in our expectations. Uncertainty in our expectations causes fear. Fear creates stuck states and a need to fall back into survival mode. Fear and survival mode cause much of the workplace drama and negativity so many experience in todayâs work environments. If you lead an organization, youâre responsible for this cycle. It starts at the top. Turning around this scenario is simple! Itâs about creating a behaviorally defined, values based work environment. Are you ready to step up to the challenge?

Four Steps To Finding Or Starting Your Own Tribe - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Four Steps To Finding Or Starting Your Own Tribe - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you have a tribe? Seth Godin says a tribe is a group of people connected to one another, to a leader, and to an idea. A tribe is not necessarily a geographic group of people bound together by proximity and family. A tribe can be a group of people centered around a single idea, like being baristas, being writers, or being accountants. Are you in a tribe? Or do you lead a tribe? Or have you recently awakened a passion or new career, and youre looking for a tribe? How to be in a tribe Here are four steps you can take to find, or at least start, your own tribe: 1. Check out Meetup.org If you live in or near a large city, check out Meetup.org.. Thats where other people who are interested in your same area will go to find each other, and seek out any groups of like-minded people to gather with. Whether youre a writer, photographer, hiker, or entrepreneur, there are groups in a lot of cities that gather. Keep in mind that these will not be all of the people in your community, just the people who have signed up for Meetup.org. There are plenty of people in this field or area who arent part of the group. So dont limit your efforts just to this. 2. Search Twellow.com Twellow is the Twitter Yellow Pages (Twitter + Yellow = Twellow. Get it?) It searches Twitter bios for specific keywords. If you have a Twellow account, you can place yourself in certain Twellow categories, even if you dont have those terms in your bio. Search for people who have the keywords of your tribe and start following them. Set up a public Twitter list, and place all your new people in your list. Start monitoring the list closely, and talk with them about your shared passion. 3. Join a LinkedIn Group Depending on your chosen field, there may be an already-established LinkedIn group you could join. Join the group, participate in the discussions, and connect with your fellow group members to increase your network and find more people. If there isnt a group, start one, if its appropriate to LinkedIn. (Some interests are more fun/hobby related, rather than professional.) Invite other people to join you, and use that as a place to gather, ask and answer questions, and develop and lead your own tribe. 4. Look for a niche network or forum In some cases, there may be forum discussion groups you can join, or Ning-like networks. These forums are based on particular topics and interests, and will have message boards you can contribute to. Theyre for the serious, die-hard users, because they typically dont have all the bells and whistles of other social networks. Most of the forums Ive seen tend to be more focused around hobbies, although there are also some business-related forums, like manufacturing and travel. The best way to do any kind of networking, whether for business or personal satisfaction, is to find your tribes, because theyre the people who know whats going on in your community or industry. These will be the people who can point you toward conferences, organizations, meetings, or other knowledgeable people in the industry. Remember, the bigger and more tight your network is, the bigger and better the opportunities you can find. 5 Pieces of Jewelry Perfectly Designed For Working Moms
5 Pieces of Jewelry Perfectly Designed For Working Moms You need to embrace a style that fits with your working dress code. An all-black outfit may be dull and unattractive. You can add more style and color wearing long layered necklaces, interesting bracelets or sleek watches. Accessories and jewelry can make all the difference. You will feel more capable and confident as a mom but also as a business woman. Working moms have a particular sense of fashion that makes them feel comfortable at their job and also when theyâre in the park playing with the kids. Here are some great jewelry accessories to help you look professional all day long. 5 Pieces of Jewelry Perfectly Designed For Working Moms 1. Brooches hair accessories Brooches are elegant jewelry items that can be worn at work, but also during your leisure time with the kids. They come in different shapes and sizes, and give an exclusive look to both your business and casual outfit. Working moms want to look perfect at the office too. Pairing a classy shirt and pencil black pants with a long cardigan and an impactful brooch will give a touch of glamour to your everyday work attire. Youâll make a great impression. 2. Fancy bracelets watches If you are a financial advisor or a consultant, it probably means that youâre moving and talking all day long. You need to get peopleâs undivided attention and entice them with your words and appealing wardrobe. Gestures are essentials in business negotiations. As a business mom, you need to grab attention. Wear something shiny like a fancy bracelet, or why not, a luxurious watch. This will give your outfit a graceful allure. Accessorize a colored t-shirt or a pencil skirt with a gold wristwatch or a thin belt around your stomach. This will complete your outfit and will make it appear modern, classy and enthralling. Your clients will be excited to do business with you. 3. Statement jewelry Statement jewelry at work might look peculiar; and yet, the right accessories will make you stand out and make a positive impression on your colleagues and clients. Business women and working moms need to feel confident so they can compete with their male colleagues and showcase a smart, intelligent attitude at the office. Increasingly more corporations encourage women to emphasize their personal style at work, but without crossing the line. If youâre a working mom and you want to stand out above the rest, wearing an office suit with statement jewelry should give you a boost of confidence. 4. Rings The diversity of rings you can wear at work is endless. If youâre married, of course you will wear your engagement and wedding ring. If youâre not, you can easily wear chic rings, but make sure theyâre not too flashy. You should avoid statement rings with too many diamonds or gems because they are overly extravagant. Todayâs rings must be stylish and discreet; made of gold or silver to exude elegance and high-class. Signets have made a comeback. Now women can wear them just as much as men. The right signet ring should be made of a top-quality material, such as gold or silver. As for the crest, a beautiful engraving or even a gem should do the trick. The simpler the ring the better; remember that youâre going to the office, and not to a party. Avoid flashy bands with colorful stones, and keep things simple but stylish. 5. Discreet necklaces A proper way of making an outfit look less boring is with thin silver or gold necklaces with discreet pearls or pendants. Pendants should have a specific color, such as red, green or white. This will make you feel professional at work, stylish and attractive.

Why you should start career planning in your first year of university - Debut
Why you should start career planning in your first year of university - Debut This post was written by an external contributor. Chinyere Ogwe advises why first year is the opportune time to start your career journey. Going away to university is exciting. Alongside studying for a degree, youâll also have the chance to meet new people, make friends and join societies that align with your hobbies and interests. However, your time at university should also be an opportunity to start your career journey. In fact, career planning should begin as soon as you start university. After all, why wait? Itâs never too early to start thinking about your desired job and industry even if youre in your first year. Lets be clear: when we say career planning, we DONT mean applying for graduate jobs when you still have three years (or more) of studying left. Its more holistic, looking at what you want from the future and ensuring that youre prepared to tackle the job search once you finish university. So, here are some things to keep in mind! Youâll be steps ahead Starting early means that you can get ahead and prepare for your career after graduation. You can figure out what potential employers are looking for, which will help you to create a strategic plan to enter your chosen industry. This is better than leaving your career planning until the final year, which is when youâll be stressed out with heavy workloads and dissertations. Finding a job can be incredibly tough for graduates. But by career planning as early as possible, you can be ready to enter the working world as soon as you leave university. You can acquire skills Career planning in your first year gives you enough time to start working on improving your skills. For example, if youâre interested in a career in digital media, you can start working on building up your writing, SEO and social media skills in your spare time. If you want to become a software developer then you could learn how to create software and teach yourself via online tutorials. Depending on your ideal profession, you could even work on creating a portfolio to showcase your skills and your best work. You can start gaining work experience ASAP For some students, university offers plenty of time off, meaning that you can take on jobs or work experience placements during the holidays. If you start career planning in your first year, it means that you can figure out when to fit in some time to gain some relevant experience. Then you can start learning new things, making connections and getting to know what a typical day is like in your chosen field. You can find future work placements Some university degree programmes offer a placement year as part of the course. If this is something youâre interested in then you should start looking at this option as soon as possible. You can get into the swing of filling in applications, perfecting your CV and cover letter and attending interviews. Many companies that offer placements to students have deadlines so itâs important to apply as soon as possible. Plus, by going through the process you know what to expect when applying for jobs in the future. You might even end up turning your future internship into a future job! So start planning for your career now. Evaluate your skills and interests. Do your research. Volunteer. Get a part-time job. Create your CV. Set up a LinkedIn account. Speak to a careers adviser. Attend careers fairs. By putting in the work now, youâll be steps ahead and closer to your career goals before you even realise. Download Debut and connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for more careers insights.
